Newfound Regional High School
Bristol, NH
The Newfound Regional High School is situated on a narrow, wooded site between the Pemigewasset River and the adjacent hillside. The topography required that the building site, ball fields, and track be placed on plateaus connected by paths and bridges spanning ravines and streams, resulting in a strong integration of the new building with the landscape.
The school is designed to allow extensive community use of the gymnasium and 500-seat auditorium while keeping the classroom wing isolated. The two glass-enclosed lobby entrances with gabled canopies and large granite-banded columns suggest that this is a public building open to the community.
The school is designed using simple forms and high quality materials to produce a low maintenance facility at a reasonable cost. The durable materials look as good after 30 years as the day the school opened.
